Typing Tower Defense
You command the last fortress, and an endless army is marching down the road towards it. Your five towers are built, loaded and waiting. They fire only when you type. Read the field, pick your target and let the keyboard do the defending.
How to play Typing Tower Defense
Choose a target
Every enemy on the road carries a word. Type its first letter to lock on. When two words share a letter, the enemy nearest your castle is chosen, because it is the most urgent.
Finish the word to fire
When the word is complete, the castle's ballista shoots, and so does every tower whose dashed range circle covers that enemy. Tough enemies survive the volley and get a new word to type.
Spend coins between waves
Kills earn coins. In the build phase after each wave, type a tower's name, such as cannon, to upgrade it, or type start to send in the next wave early.
A typing defense game that rewards thinking, not just speed
A lot of typing games boil down to "type whatever appears, as fast as you can". This one asks a harder question: which word should you type first? A runner with a five-letter word, a tank with a ten-letter word and a cluster of bats can all be on the road at once. The runner will reach the gate soonest. The tank does the most damage if it gets there. The bats die to almost anything. Good players make that call in a split second, and that is exactly the kind of reading ahead that makes everyday typing faster.
Where an enemy is matters as much as what it is. Your towers sit at fixed spots along a winding road, and each one covers part of it. Finish a tank's word while it walks through the cannon's circle and it takes a heavy shell. Finish it a few metres later and only the ballista fires. Waiting a moment for the right spot is often smarter than typing straight away.
All of it runs in your browser with nothing to install. The map, the towers, the projectiles and the monsters are drawn live, and your words per minute are measured only while you are typing, so planning time is never held against you.
The five towers
Each tower can be upgraded twice. Every level adds damage and widens its range by about a tenth.
Arrow tower
The fastest defender. It looses an arrow on every correct letter you type at an enemy in its range, so long words turn into a volley. It covers the road's entrance.
Cannon tower
Slow, loud and powerful. It fires once per finished word, deals extra damage when the word has seven letters or more, and its shell splashes onto anything standing close by.
Magic tower
Finish a word of six letters or more in its range and its crystal sends a homing orb at every enemy it can reach. It needs a couple of seconds to recharge between bursts.
Freeze tower
This one has its own word, shown above it in blue. Type that word and the whole battlefield slows to a crawl for a few seconds. Then the crystals need time to recharge.
Lightning tower
A tesla coil that hits hard and then jumps to nearby enemies. It needs a few seconds to charge. When the orb glows bright and crackles, the next word you finish in range sets it off.
The castle ballista
Your castle always fires one bolt at the enemy you just typed, wherever it is on the map. On its own it is enough for walkers and runners, but not for tanks or bosses.
Enemy types and waves
Your castle has 20 lives. Enemies march a little faster every wave, tanks and bosses get tougher, and a second road opens from the south on wave six.
| Enemy | Arrives from | Speed | Words | Lives lost at the gate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walker | Wave 1 | Slow | Easy everyday words | 1 |
| Runner | Wave 3 | Very fast | Short words | 1 |
| Tank | Wave 11 | Very slow, lots of health | Long words, several in a row | 3 |
| Swarm | Wave 11 | Quick, in groups of four | Three-letter words | 1 each |
| Boss | Waves 10, 20, 30, then every 5th | Crawling | Whole phrases, many hits | 10 |
Clean typing doubles your firepower
5 clean kills: 2x damage
Every tower and the ballista hit twice as hard, so tanks and bosses go down in far fewer words.
10 clean kills: 3x damage
Triple damage makes short work of tanks, which keeps the road clear and the streak going.
20 clean kills: Firestorm
Fire rains on the whole map and scorches every enemy at once. Keep the streak alive and it happens again at 40, 60 and beyond. A single typo resets the count.
Commander's tips
Upgrade the cannon early
It fires on every finished word in its circle and covers the middle of the road, where tanks spend the most time.
Save Freeze for crowds
Slowing one walker wastes it. Wait until three or four enemies are bunched together, or a boss is close to the gate.
Let tanks walk into range
A tank is slow. Start its word early, but time the last letter for when it is inside the cannon or lightning circle.
Watch both roads
From wave six, enemies on the southern road have a much shorter walk. Check the bottom of the map often.
Use the dashed circles
While you type, the towers that can reach your target show their range. No circles means only the ballista will fire.
Protect the streak
Two or three times the damage is worth more than one extra word. Slow down a touch rather than break a long combo.
Typing Tower Defense questions
Is this tower defense typing game free online?
Yes. Typing Tower Defense is free, runs in any modern browser and needs no download, account or payment. Your best score stays on your device.
How do the towers decide when to shoot?
Towers never fire on their own. When you finish an enemy's word, the ballista and every tower whose range covers that enemy attack it. The arrow tower also fires on each correct letter.
How do I upgrade a tower?
After each wave there is a short build phase. Type the tower's name, for example arrow or lightning, and if you have enough coins it goes up a level. The price is shown above each tower.
Is a typing defense game good typing practice?
Yes. You type real words under time pressure and choose targets on the fly, which trains reading ahead and accuracy. It also counts towards your practice streak and history on Check My WPM.
What happens when an enemy reaches the castle?
You lose lives: one for walkers, runners and bats, three for a tank and ten for a boss. The castle starts with 20 lives, and the game ends when they are gone.
