A typing test built for programmers
Prose typing tests barely touch the keys developers use most: brackets, braces, semicolons, operators and underscores. This typing test for programmers uses real snippets, so you practice the exact patterns you type every day.
Pick a language from the menu and the test keeps its original whitespace and indentation. It is a fast way to get fluent in a new language's syntax or to stop reaching for the mouse and backspace in the one you already use.
12 programming languages
JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, Kotlin, C++, C#, HTML, CSS, SQL, JSON and Bash.
Symbols and brackets
Train the reaches to { } [ ] ( ) ; : = and friends, which slow most typists down.
Monospace text
Code is shown in a monospaced font with indentation kept, just like in your editor.
Developer typing test questions
How fast should a programmer type?
Most developers type code at 40 to 70 WPM. Code has more symbols and pauses for thinking than prose, so coding WPM is usually lower than English WPM. Being fast and accurate with symbols matters more than raw speed.
Does typing speed matter for programming?
Typing is not the hard part of programming, but fluent typing keeps you in flow. When brackets and symbols come without thinking, you spend less attention on the keyboard and more on the problem.
Which languages can I practice?
JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, Kotlin, C++, C#, HTML, CSS, SQL, JSON and Bash. Pick one from the Language menu next to the category.
Can I practice with my own code?
Yes. Switch the test type to Custom and paste any code you like. Your whitespace and line breaks are kept.
