Typing Snake: The Snake Game You Play by Typing
A hungry snake is loose in a glowing digital jungle, and words are ripening all around it. There are no arrow keys here. Start typing a word and the snake slithers after it. Finish the word and the snake swallows it whole and grows longer.
How to play Typing Snake
Pick a word
Words sit on glowing fruit around the map. Type the first letter of one and the snake turns towards it. A trail of dots shows the route it will take.
Finish it before you arrive
The snake can only eat a word you have typed in full. If it gets there early, it circles nearby until you finish. Once a word is done you can start the next one while the snake is still on its way.
Grow and survive
Every word makes the snake longer and the game a little faster. Hitting a wall, a rock or your own tail ends the run, and so does running out of food in Classic mode.
The classic snake game, rebuilt around the keyboard
Snake is one of the oldest video games around. On old mobile phones you steered with the number keys, and in browsers with the arrow keys. Typing Snake keeps everything that made it addictive, the growing tail, the tight corners and the creeping speed, but hands the steering to your typing. You choose where to go by choosing what to type.
That small change makes it a surprisingly good typing trainer. You are always weighing up the board. The short word right next to the snake is quick and safe. The long word on the far side earns more points but needs a longer, riskier trip past your own body. Making that call while your fingers are already moving is the same split attention fast typists rely on every day.
The jungle is drawn live in your browser. Fireflies drift over mossy tiles, faint circuit lines glow under the leaves, and the snake's tongue flicks as it hunts. There is nothing to install and no account to make, so a round takes less than a minute to start.
Classic or 60 seconds
Classic: don't starve
Survive as long as you can. A hunger bar along the top drains all the time and refills with every word you eat, so you cannot simply stop typing and let the snake wander. The longer the run, the faster both the snake and the hunger get.
Typing Snake vs. Time
You have one minute to score as much as you can. Fast typing means more words eaten, a longer snake, higher levels and a faster game. It is the mode to pick if you want a quick snake typing game to compare scores with friends.
Scoring
Each word is worth ten points per letter. Every three words in a row without a typo raise your combo, up to four times the points. Your mode choice is remembered for next time.
Special words
After your first couple of words, special fruit starts to appear. Their words are written in capitals and each one has its own icon and colour.
| Word | What it does | When to take it |
|---|---|---|
| SPEED | The snake moves 50% faster for five seconds and every word is worth double | When the board is open and you are typing well |
| SHIELD | Saves you from one crash by flipping the snake around | Always, especially once the snake is long |
| GOLD | 100 bonus points | Whenever it is close |
| FREEZE | Half speed for five seconds | When things get crowded or too fast to handle |
| FIRE | Burns away rocks and beetles nearby, plus 50 points | When obstacles are closing in |
| CURSE | Big points, but the snake goes extremely fast for five seconds. It also strikes if you slither over it | Only if you are brave, and never by accident |
How the jungle fights back
Levels 1 to 9
You level up every four words. The snake gets a little quicker each time, more words appear on the map and they get longer. From level 3 the curse can show up.
Level 10 and up
Mossy rocks start to block the ground, and another one appears every level. Snake routes get longer, and a careless word can lead you into a dead end.
Level 20 and beyond
Red beetles start patrolling the jungle. A beetle that meets your snake's head ends the run, but one that walks into your body gets squashed for 30 points.
Tips for a longer snake
Queue your words
As soon as one word is finished, start the next. The snake eats them in order, so a fast typist always has the next meal lined up.
Watch the dotted route
If the route to a word wraps around your tail, pick a closer one instead and come back later.
Typos slow you down
A wrong letter makes the snake sluggish for a moment and resets your combo. In the 60 second mode that costs real points.
Grab shields early
A shield lasts until you need it. Collecting one while the board is easy makes the hard levels far less scary.
Change your mind
Press Ctrl+Backspace to drop the word you are typing if a better one appears, then type the new word's first letter.
Mind the edges
Words near the walls are safe to eat but easy to get trapped behind. Leave yourself a way out.
Typing Snake questions
Is Typing Snake a free snake game online?
Yes. It is a free browser game with no download and no sign-up. It works on any computer with a keyboard, and your best score is saved on your device.
How do I steer the snake without arrow keys?
You steer by typing. The snake always heads for the word you are typing, and for any words you have already finished. It plans its own route, so your job is to choose good words and type them cleanly.
Can I still crash into walls or my own tail?
Yes. The snake avoids danger when it can, but a long, fast snake in a crowded jungle can still box itself in. Rocks, beetles and a long body make that more likely at higher levels.
Is a snake keyboard game good for learning to type?
It is best once you know where the keys are. If you are still learning, start with Typing Quest or Key Hunt, then come back to Typing Snake to build speed with real words.
Which mode should I play first?
Start with the 60 second mode. It is short, every round can be compared with the last, and it shows quickly how your typing speed turns into snake length.
