Punctuation Typing Test
Most typing tests skip the hard keys. This one is built around them: commas and semicolons, @ and #, quotes, brackets and everything on the Shift layer.

Train the keys other tests skip
Symbols and punctuation are where most typists lose speed. They sit on the edges of the keyboard, many need the Shift key, and they appear in everything from emails to passwords to code.
Choose a focus from the menu: Punctuation for commas, colons and question marks in natural sentences, Symbols for @, #, $, %, & and maths signs, or Quotes & brackets for dialogue and nested text.
Three focus areas
Punctuation, symbols, or quotes and brackets. Switch between them any time from the Focus menu.
Real-world text
Email addresses, prices, hashtags, file paths and dialogue: the places symbols really show up.
Shift key practice
Most symbols need Shift. Regular practice here makes those two-key reaches automatic.
Punctuation typing test questions
Why is typing punctuation so slow?
Punctuation and symbol keys are on the outer edges of the keyboard and many need the Shift key, so your fingers travel further and coordinate two keys at once. Focused practice makes those reaches automatic.
Which finger should type the semicolon and quotes?
The right pinky. In touch typing it rests on the semicolon and also covers the quote key, the brackets and Enter.
Which symbols are most useful to practice?
The @ sign for email, # and % for social media and data, the dollar sign and comma for prices, and parentheses and quotes for writing. The Symbols focus includes all of them.
Is this useful for programmers?
Yes, as a warm-up. For real code with indentation, use the Developer typing test after you are comfortable with the symbol keys here.
