| WPM | Level | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 25 | Beginner | Still looking at the keys. Learning touch typing will bring the fastest gains. |
| 25 to 40 | Average | Typical for casual computer users and most students. |
| 40 to 60 | Above average | Comfortable for office work, email and most job requirements. |
| 60 to 80 | Fast | Professional level. Meets the bar for transcription and data entry roles. |
| 80 to 100 | Very fast | Faster than about 95% of typists. |
| 100+ | Elite | Competitive typists and stenography-level speed. |
How to improve your typing speed
The same habits that fast typists use. None of them need special software.
Learn touch typing
Keep your eyes on the screen, not the keyboard. Touch typing is the single biggest jump in words per minute for most people.
Anchor on the home row
Rest your fingers on ASDF and JKL; and feel for the bumps on F and J. Every reach starts and ends there.
Accuracy first, speed second
Slow down until you hit 95% accuracy. Fixing mistakes costs more time than typing a little slower.
Practice little and often
Fifteen minutes a day beats two hours once a week. Short, daily typing practice builds muscle memory fastest.
Train your weak spots
If numbers or symbols slow you down, drill them directly with the number typing test or coding typing test.
Make it a game
Our typing games use the same engine as the test, so every round still trains real speed and accuracy.
A typing test for every kind of typing
Office work, programming, schoolwork and data entry all use the keyboard differently. Practice the one you need.

How does this typing speed test work?
This online typing speed test (words per minute, or WPM) measures your speed as you type. Pick a test length, then start typing the words on screen. The timer begins with your first keystroke and your words per minute (WPM), accuracy and error count update live as you type. When the time runs out you get a full result with net WPM, raw WPM, consistency and a speed graph for the whole test.
What is WPM and how is it calculated?
WPM means words per minute, the standard unit for typing speed. Because words vary in length, one "word" is counted as five characters, including spaces and punctuation. The formula is (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, while net WPM only counts the characters you typed correctly, which is the number employers and typing certificates use.
What is the average typing speed?
The average typing speed for adults is about 40 WPM with around 92% accuracy. Most people who type every day for work land between 40 and 60 WPM. Anything above 70 WPM is faster than roughly 90% of typists, and professional or competitive typists regularly reach 100 to 120 WPM.
What is a good typing speed?
For most jobs, 40 WPM is a good typing speed and 60 WPM or more is considered fast. Many office, admin and customer support roles ask for 40 to 50 WPM. Transcription, legal secretary and data entry jobs often ask for 60 to 80 WPM with 95% accuracy or higher.
Is a 1 minute typing test accurate?
A 1 minute typing test gives a reliable snapshot of your current speed and is the length most employers use. For a steadier average, take three 1 minute tests and average them, or run a 2 minute test. Longer tests are more realistic because they include the natural slowdown that comes with fatigue.
How can I type faster?
Learn touch typing so you stop looking at the keyboard, keep your fingers anchored on the home row (ASDF JKL;), and slow down until your accuracy is 95% or higher. Speed follows accuracy. Practice 10 to 15 minutes every day rather than one long session a week, and mix in typing games and specialised drills like numbers or code to cover your weak spots.
How long does it take to improve typing speed?
With 15 minutes of focused practice a day, most people gain 10 to 20 WPM within four to eight weeks. Beginners learning touch typing from scratch usually get back to their old speed in two to three weeks and then keep climbing past it.
Does accuracy matter more than speed?
Yes. Every mistake costs you the time to notice it, delete it and type it again, so a typist at 60 WPM with 98% accuracy produces more finished text than one at 75 WPM with 88% accuracy. Aim for 95% accuracy first and let speed come with repetition.
Is this a keyboarding speed test for school?
Yes. Teachers and students use it as a keyboarding speed test, because it reports WPM and accuracy the same way school keyboarding checks do. For subject passages try the students typing test, and for beginners start with home row drills.
Can I use this typing test on my phone?
Yes. The test works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. For the most accurate WPM result, use a physical keyboard, since touchscreen autocorrect and predictive text change what gets typed.
Do I need an account to save my results?
No. Check My WPM is a free typing speed test: WPM, accuracy and full results with no sign-up. You can take unlimited typing tests. Your settings and recent results stay in your own browser, and you can copy or share any result in one click.
Ready to beat your score?
Most typists gain 10 WPM in their first month of daily practice.
